Iran’s Revolutionary Guards confirmed the attack, stating that Haniyeh and an Iranian bodyguard were targeted at his residence. Haniyeh was in Iran to attend the inauguration of President Masoud Pezeshkian. The Revolutionary Guards are investigating the details surrounding the incident.
Haniyeh, who served as the exiled political chief of Hamas, spent much of his recent years in Qatar. He played a key role as a negotiator in the Israel-Gaza war ceasefire talks and maintained strong connections with Iran, Hamas’s primary ally.
While Israel has not commented on Haniyeh’s death, Hamas has accused Israel of responsibility. Previously, Israel claimed responsibility for a targeted strike on a Hezbollah commander linked to a rocket explosion in Majdal Shams over the weekend.
Lebanese media reported that the strike in Beirut’s Haret Hreik neighborhood demolished a residential building and damaged a nearby hospital, causing injuries to several individuals in the densely populated area.
